Dragon Dreams - Chapter 24
Chapter 24: New Lessons, Old Fears

I opened my eyes at the sound of a knock on the door. Scuffling to my feet in a sleepy haze, I managed to avoid the woodpiles as I approached the door of the shed and cracked it open.

“Yeah?” I yawned.

“Mornin’, Josh,” Wes chirped. “Mommy’s got French toast for you, so come on in when you’re ready.”

“Okay, thanks. Gimme a minute, and I’ll be right in.”

As the boy skipped back to the house, I shook my head vigorously to clear the sleep. The eager sounds of the forest filtered in as I did some stretching. It was an incredibly bright, sunny day when I stepped outside. I shielded my eyes with a forepaw and squinted as I made my way across the backyard.

Wes sat at the table as I walked through to the kitchen, smelling the sweet sizzle of breakfast. Jackie’s pale skin glowed as the daylight illuminated her through the kitchen window. She s

Chapter 23: Fire and Ice

I heard voices murmuring up ahead long before I caught a glimpse of their sources. Stolvir walked next to me as we followed his parents to the great hall. My view was still blocked by trees as we moved through the wooded parts of the village. Nyraz and Rofar paced along in front of us, shoulders almost touching and tails bound together in a scaly, blue-green lovers’ knot.

A short time later, I glanced up ahead to see the main clearing. A crowd of dragons was funneling into the great hall, filing through the open doors. The four of us soon entered the clearing and joined the line. I looked around at the rainbow-colored parade of other dragons and noticed quite a few of them were staring at me. It was such a small village, and I figured it wasn’t hard to tell who the new arrival was.

There were so many distracting stimuli around me at once. As we approached the hall, I actually started to smell the food that awaited me. Mostly I i

Chapter 22: Past and Present

“I was fifteen years old,” Nyraz began. Her eyes glazed slightly as she recounted, wandering over to rest on a thin strip of sunlight painted on the floor. “Back then, I was living on a big farm near the tiny town of Breton Creek, Montana. My family was pretty big. I had three sisters and two brothers. There wasn’t much I had experienced outside that farm and that town. I went to school, went to church, did chores; that was the life I knew. And then came that morning in June…”

Nyraz paused and shifted her posture slightly, one wing bobbing up and down again. After a breath, she continued, “I loved reading all kinds of books growing up. Dragons were something straight from the pages of my favorite fantasy stories. Something told me these dreams I’d been having weren’t the typical kind of vivid dreams. I mean, these felt so real I couldn’t believe it. I wonder, did you experience someth

Chapter 21: Into the Valley

My talons dug into the cool earth with great satisfaction after spending so long in the air. I stood with my eyes closed for a moment, anchoring myself in this new place. The sounds and smells washed over me. I heard the river’s constant flow, the singing of birds. A breeze swirled gently around me, carrying scents of grass and leaves. Inhaling deeply, I could almost taste the untamed, unmistakable life-force of this land.

“I can’t believe I’m actually here,” I said aloud, immediately a little embarrassed at voicing such a simple observation.

Rofar chuckled. “I won’t blame you for being a bit excited,” he said. “Even I feel a rush each time I return. This is a special place.”

He was surely right about that. I couldn’t wait to explore this pristine valley that held all manner of supposedly impossible things. This was a land of dragons and magic. Things that I once co

Chapter 20: North

Rofar and I were airborne and just starting to level off at cruising altitude when the sun slipped fully below the horizon. Pink clouds still ringed the farthest reaches of the sky in the west, and the light was still sufficient to see the rugged coastline below. I was looking down at the dark waters when I felt the other dragon’s athka reach out to me. It was like a soft fingertip brushing against my skin to get my attention, but in a sense that could only be felt inside my head. A weird feeling, and one that would surely take time to get used to. Moments later, Rofar began speaking.

“Now that we are settled in, I will tell you a few more details. We will fly north to reach the clan’s valley. I cannot say exactly how long it will take, only that I expect we will need to rest a while in the middle of our journey. In the meantime, it will be most effective for us to communicate using our athkan. Can you try to do the same? Just imagin

Chapter 19: Left Unsaid

“There you are.” Jackie’s chair was thrust back as she quickly stood up from her seat at the kitchen table. “We were wondering where you went. Is there something you want for lunch? I’ve got more sandwiches if you want.”

Neither Jackie nor Wes had seen when I left, so they didn’t yet know the circumstances of my disappearance. They had both been sitting around the kitchen table, probably just finishing their lunch. An untouched place setting occupied my usual spot next to Wes. My emotional state had calmed significantly, but I felt a dull throbbing in my head, and I had to focus on keeping my breathing nice and even. They probably wanted an explanation from me, but I intended to omit anything that could cause alarm.

“I’m not hungry,” I mumbled. I didn’t elaborate.

Jackie fingered a lock of long, black hair. “Did your call work out? Is everything okay?”

Interview:
1. What is your name?
Hi everyone! You can call me Josh. Joshua Louis Redmond is my full human name. Or, I also go by Ayreth, which is my dragon name. I know, it’s a little confusing, but what can I do?
2. Do you know why you were named that?
Joshua? Not really. I think it’s from the Bible or something. I guess my parents liked it. As for Ayreth, the name came to me in a dream after I first transformed into a dragon. I don’t know how I thought of it, but I like it.

3. Single or taken?
Single…I have had other things on my mind than worrying about my next date.

4. Have any Abilities or powers?
I’m still new at it, but as a dragon I can use magic. Yeah, pretty cool, right? I can breathe fire and do a few other simple things, but I have a lot to learn.

5. What's your eye colour?
Gold.

6. Hair?

Chapter 17: Something to Remember

Wes didn’t bother coming all the way out to the shed to get me when it was time for lunch. Instead, he just shouted from the back door. I stood up and walked back into the house (still wanting to be seen on two legs) where I saw plates of sandwiches on the table. My plate had four, each one piled high with meat and laid out neatly in two halves. My stomach growled as I sat down next to Wes again.

Something on the floor brushed the end of my tail, and I looked back to see a small, white creature batting at it experimentally. I thought it must be Wes’s cat, Winter. She crouched low, eyeing the appendage warily. I gave the tip a little flick, and she immediately bolted with a surprised yowl. As the white blur vanished, I gave Wes a mischievous grin.

“Well, I dunno what she thinks about you now,” he giggled. “But, I’m sure she’ll like you before too long.”

Chapter 16: A Story to Tell

The morning dew cooled my hind paws as I strode across the backyard. I could see the inside of the house through the kitchen window. Jackie stood behind the glass, looking down as she prepared something at the stove. Wes sat at the table behind her, elbows planted on the wood surface as he sipped juice from a cup. Neither looked up at me as I approached.

The ruined door moaned dejectedly as I pushed it aside to enter the house. “Hey, uh, good morning,” I said as I eased the stubborn door back to a nearly-closed position. Looking around the kitchen, I saw that Jackie had started to clean up a bit. There were piles of broken glass and ceramic shards swept close to the walls, leaving a clear passage to walk around. Pictures were still missing from the walls; I saw the frames stacked on one end of the counter. It still looked like a mess, but at least normal household tasks were now possible.

“Good morning,” Jackie re

Chapter 15: Taking Sides

The red-eyed beast slid out of the forest with unsettling, silent nimbleness. Ares walked up to me and held my gaze for a long moment. As in the dream, the dragon had a perceptible aura of cold authority. He was not physically much larger than I was, but there was something more about him that made my tail coil inward and my mouth go dry. When he looked at me, I got the sense, as I sometimes did with Rofar, that he was reading me on a deeper level. But this just added to my anxiety. I had no idea if he would fight me again, or employ another strategy get what he wanted.

The black dragon spoke. “I smell blood on you, hatchling. Did things get a little messy in there?”

I looked down at my paw. The man’s blood still coated the tips of my claws where I had pressed down on his chest. “I…It wasn’t…”

“Humans,” he spat, interrupting my halting response. “So much violenc

"Are you sure he's the one?" A deep voice says as it echoes across the dark and dingy cavern.
"If he's not, then their race and maybe even ours is screwed." A higher pitched voice says.
"He's passed all of the tests with flying colors. But why him and not the sister?" A different voice than the other two asked.
The first voice answered "Because, she can explode at some point. All he wants is respect from people for everyone."
"Do you think he'll be a good leader?"
"I'm not sure. He normally looks at the situation and then tries to find a passive way out.
"Ok but is there anything we can give her? We can only change one of them." The voice answered back.
"We could give her the gift of speech." The female voice says.
"That could work." The first voice answered.
"Excellent, I think we're all in agreement. Let us begin." The voice responded back.
Just when the voice finished speaking, a sphere of pure white light came out the ground emitting light into the cavern. The caver

Chronicle of a Drake: Chapter 1
The sky was clear and the sun was bright. On the coastal plateau, sat a dragon feeling the air dance around him and waited for a favorable breeze before taking off. The dragon had dark blue scales, cyan chest plates, a blonde mane, golden eyes and golden markings across his body. He took a deep breath and exhaled with a contented sigh, the winds had become favorable. The dragon spread his wings and took off from the ground. He lowered himself to a point where he could run his talons through the ocean. The water felt cool and refreshing to him and now feeling invigorated, the dragon turned to start flying through the crags and cliffs surrounding the coastline. He flew with a gracefulness that would make the most majestic birds of prey jealous. The dragon navigated through the rock faces and crags without any fear of faltering. After a few hours of flying above the sea and through nearby valleys, the dragon landed near a forest where he intended to hunt. At this point the wh

Where My Child used to Sleep (Poem)
I lay down on her bed
With sweet linens so soft
With the sweet scent of conditioner
As my mind now goes aloft
To better days than this
As a single tear now falls
To the hell that I endured
And suffer grief from it all
No more will she sleep
On these sheets that kept her warm
As the rain now falls so somber
I have failed at what I've sworn
When I found her she was destitute
With no place to call home
So I grabbed her by her hands
To my chimney to keep her warm
I promised to keep her happy
I promised her hope and joy
That life would be so precious
And that she'll play with lots of toys
We were inseparable us two
From the day I took her in
And all the fun we had since then
And all the games she'd always win
A pure crystal angel
With cheeks so soft and white
This little girl so incredible
And indeed a beautiful sight
She was nice to all she greeted
And she greeted the whole world
With no hint of animosity
Or spite to have her curled
We'd travel the whole world
So long as money would all

Chapter 1 - CALL

Under a thousand tons of ink-black water, I could breathe.
The cool of it pressed down on me, but I wasn’t cold. The faintest traces of light drifted down and revealed a blurry waterscape, black stones and wave-smoothed bricks and broken statues.
I was the only thing living, but the loneliness was comforting. It was like someone hit the mute button of a million screaming background noises, which I had slowly grown used to and stopped noticing before this moment. Now it was finally quiet.
I moved forward effortlessly, gliding across the seafloor. It seemed I was travelling through ruins, though the imagery was strange and disjointed. Classical Greek statues, robed and elegant, lay beside more modern brass sculptures of war heroes. Empty frames rested in the rubble, shredded canvases rippling in the currents. There was a stronger s

Dragon book of the month: 6 months in DA special!
My favourite dragon writings on DeviantArt
Today it's officially half a year of DeviantArt for me! So instead of a book I want to celebrate the community itself and show what pieces of dragon literature I've liked most in these 6 months, and hopefully I'll do so every 6 months again.
So let's start.

I personally give him the first place. His story is probably the only dragon TF one that I've liked. The reason is that Iamayreth, with his protagonist Josh (Ayreth for dragons) actually explores what changes such an event brings inside a mind of one who would turn into a dragon: Josh lives a series of painful experiences like the difficulty of finding himself again, the fear of hurting his dears, loss of friends and loneliness.
In the story he has to face the menace of an evil dragon who tries to tempt him to the "dark side" of dragons, but meanwhile he finds support in Rofar, a dr

Flight or Fiction? - Anatomy for a Dragon P1
Part One
Have you ever considered what would it be like if dragons were real? Have you thought about how they would look? Ectothermic or Endothermic? Scaled or feathered? And most importantly - would they fly?
How would they fly?
Welcome to an essay about the Mythical Dragon.
"Flight or Fiction? – To Investigate the Potential Anatomy of a Mythical Dragon and evaluate the effectiveness of Adaptations that would aid in Flight"

~ SaphireDragon16

Introduction

The purpose of this essay is to explain and conclude the findings taken from researching existing animal species, and from that research then creating a real mythical dragon, the main focus of this research is to select adaptations mythical dragons might require for flight.
‘How does a dragon fly?’ is a commonly asked question among dragon fanatics, and is highly speculated. The topic is unconvincing due to the interference of magic in dragon mythology and the lack of realistic e

I hope everyone is having a nice summer! There are just a couple updates I want to share. First, I'll be going "off the grid" on a vacation from now until about the end of the month. There probably won't be anything coming out for another couple weeks, sorry about that. I'll try to get back to work when I return, and hopefully it won't be long before I can release some more chapters. (My beta reader has convinced me to add a new chapter in this section, so it's taking a bit more time than expected.)

In the meantime, I hope everyone can be patient with me. I'm excited to keep getting my story out, and I hope this break will even be a good thing for my creativity in the long run. I'll be back in the neighborhood soon!
I started writing this in the footer of my most recent "Dragon Dreams" chapter, but I just started going on and on so I thought I would go ahead and make a journal of it.

It's been a month since I posted a chapter, so I thought I would finally get this next one published. Today also happens to be the day I graduated college, so it's been a fun day and also one full of reflection on things I've accomplished. I think writing has been a really valuable undertaking for me, and although I haven't finished this story yet, I still feel a sense of accomplishment when I look at how much I've done.

To anyone out there still in school, take advantage of all the resources and mentorship you have. It really goes a long way. Nobody graduates college or accomplishes anything without the help and support of those around them. Work hard, have fun, try to keep a good balance, and your future self will thank you immensely.

A quick note about passion. Don't stress if you haven't found your "calling" yet. People seem obsessed with finding and pursuing the "one thing" that they love and will make them happy, and that can be great, but it's not always a realistic attitude. I'm a college graduate, and I'm not even sure I've found what I'm truly passionate about, but I'm not worried about it. I'm young and I have many interests. My advice: stay curious and be a lifelong learner, and you will stumble upon things that you love. When you find that something, don't give up because the road is difficult; if you love it, it will be worth it in the end.

I realize this might sound really cliché and sappy, but I swear it's true. I can hardly express how thankful I am for the people in my life who have made all of this possible. There aren't too many days where I think I have been this proud of what I'm capable of, but I am truly humbled by the ways my family, friends, teachers, mentors, and many more people have touched my life. Sometimes the clichés are fitting. Sorry for all the tangents and rambling; I think I'll wrap it up here. I wish everyone the best of luck on your journey, whatever that may be, and I hope you can accomplish great things. But always stay humble and remember that you don't accomplish anything alone.
  • Listening to: Of Monsters and Men
I've been pretty quiet recently, and I'm sorry about that, but I've been pretty busy finishing up my last semester in college. It's pretty exciting, and I'm very close to being done and moving on to new things. Four years have gone by so fast! Now I'm in the middle of preparing for my last round of finals, so I'll keep it short. More chapters are on the way, and I'll get this next block of chapters all up as soon as they're ready (hopefully within another month or so). Then I'll probably have a long break while I write the next section, but I'll hopefully have time to share smaller stuff in the meantime. Maybe some short stories, poems, and visual art will show up here and there.

Sorry again for being so quiet, but I'm going to get back to sharing stuff soon! Thanks for your patience, and I hope everyone in school right now is having a good end of the year!

Hello!

If you're reading this, thanks for stopping by! This profile is simply meant as a way for me to share my creative works so maybe others can get some enjoyment from them as well.

Now, here's a little more about me. I am currently in college, studying to be an engineer. Nothing to do with art or writing except taking the odd art class here and there! I just happen to like making art and have been drawing and painting as a hobby for most of my life. It helps keep me sane when I get stressed out!

Writing is something I have less experience with, but I do love to read. Fantasy stories remain some of my favorite things to read, so I decided to try creative writing as another outlet. Reading some of the authors on this site was a big inspiration for me and convinced me that maybe my stories could be worth sharing too! I am still learning and trying to improve my writing, so getting feedback and support from other writers here has been amazing.

I'm a pretty shy person but don't be afraid to say hello anyway. If I don't respond right away, please understand it's nothing personal. Other things I enjoy are photography, playing guitar, sports (especially football), being outside, and randomly browsing Wikipedia (seriously, I do this way too much).

I look forward to interacting with this community and sharing more of my work!

Merry Christmas! I wish everyone out there a wonderful holiday season!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! If there's something better than family and food, I don't know what it is!
Wow, I have 50 watchers now! I have no words. I'm just so thankful for all of you who have given me that honor!
So, it's been exactly one year since I joined this site. Happy anniversary to me, I guess!
